The National Honor Society is one of the nation's leading organizations which was established to recognize outstanding high school students. The NHS strives to not only notice honor roll recipients, but also to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Since, 192, these characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization.
Today, there are more than one million students who participate in NHS activities. NHS chapters can be found in all 50 states, Canada, the District of Columbia and many U.S. territories. Chapter membership recognizes students for their accomplishments, as well as challenges them to develop further through school activities and community service.
The National Association of Secondary School Principals officially established NHS in 1921. When it was first started, the NHS only had local and regional honor societies, but no nationwide organization has been founded yet. Dr. Edward Rynearson, principal of the Fifth Avenue High School in Pittsburgh, helped to lead the organization's growth from the ori ginal Alpha Chapter at the Fifth Avenue School to more than 1,000 chapters by 1930. Now the NHS organization is one of the country's top educational groups and is equipped with a constitution, a motto, an emblem, and a group of dedicated principals as coordinators.
Erica Desai has always given a hundred-and-ten percent to her studies. When she graduated from High School she was a member of the National Honor Society and had a 4.0 grade-point average. She continued her disciplined study habits while attending the University of North Carolina, where she made the Dean's list for four semesters in a row. Presently, she has a Master's in Social Work, and is a healthcare professional at Duke University Medical Center
