Erica Desai is a healthcare worker at Duke University Medical Center where she has worked for the last two years. She received a Bachelor's degree in Public Health from the University of North Carolina and went on to UNC’s School of Education, where she earned her Master's in Social Work.
She says that she knew by the time she was a freshman in high school that she wanted to be a health care. As a direct-service health care worker she might have found herself helping people solve with the problems they were having with everyday life. As a healthcare worker, she is more specialized, and takes on many tasks. She works directly with people who have serious, heart conditions, trauma, and other issues.
Erica Desai says that above all else, being a healthcare worker requires a great deal of patience and compassion. She says that she is constantly running up against obstacles in her work: everything from clients who are difficult to work with but still need a lot of help, to outside agencies that are too often unresponsive or slow to respond, whether they are government or private agencies. All of it can be enormously challenging and enormously frustrating, she says, and she has had to learn when to be assertive, and when to be charming. "It's all about getting my patients what they need."
One of the things that Erica Desai truly loves about her work is that there is virtually no repetition; every day is different. "I'm lucky in that I get to know patients over the long haul. Their doctor might change. But not me; I'm a constant. And I am truly blessed." Erica Desai has always had a strong desire to do something that makes a difference in other people’s lives and reflects her beliefs in good deeds and helping others.
